Coach Approach Training Designed for Human Services

Why a Coach approach?

In Human Services, we find ourselves asking staff or caseworkers to coach the people they support through times of challenge and complexity. But who is coaching the workers to provide the best support? In The Coach Approach Training Program, we train staff, supervisors, and leaders to embed The Coach Approach in everything they do, so that coaching is modeled with accountability throughout the organization on a daily basis.

As professional coaches and trainers, we know the value of The Coach Approach Mindset: that people are best helped when they are supported and empowered to use critical thinking to solve day-to-day problems on their own. Using The Coach Approach with staff to help them come up with their own solutions builds their self-confidence and empowerment in a way that will enhance your relationships through trust and respect. The Coach Approach can be used in all workplace conversations with an intention of strengthening others so they bring their best selves to their work.

Overview of The Coach Approach Training

The core of The Coach Approach is a two-day training that is customized to our clients’ organization or system. We use live and recorded demonstrations to model The Coach Approach to real life situations – nothing is scripted and there are no role plays. We describe The Coach Approach Mindset, understanding our underlying assumptions about people and setting the right intentions to make a lasting impact. Then we practice! Our first practice is before lunch on Day 1, where pairs of participants engage in a conversation to understand first hand what The Coach Approach looks and feels like.

Topics include:

  • How do I become and stay present even in the midst of chaos and conflict?

  • What does engaged listening look like and how can I become and remain an engaged listener?

  • How can I ask powerful questions that unlock deeper responses to our leadership challenges?

  • How can I use direct communication and feedback to support the adaptive work?

  • How can I use leadership coaching skills in our daily interactions to create ongoing opportunities for internal/cross-system collaboration?

We acknowledge the skills people bring into the room with them and build on them so that participants can feel successful in this approach. We ask participants to bring real-life situations to their Coach Approach conversations to get real help they can use right away. Many participants leave the practices with their own real solutions to problems and issues that have been troubling them for weeks, sometimes even years!

The last part of the training focuses on accountability and implementation – setting and sharing plans for how the participant, the team, and the organization will take The Coach Approach forward.

Our training is interactive, hands-on, and fun. We teach The Coach Approach Mindset and Skillset that enables participants to feel comfortable using The Coach Approach immediately. Our material is constantly evolving and adapts to each organization's needs and challenges.

Leadership Programs Tailored to Your Needs

As your leaders and staff complete The Coach Approach Core Program, other needs may arise. How can we more effective engage in challenging but essential conversations?  How do we apply The Coach Approach principles to build more engagement and buy-in? How do we effectively ensure accountability and commitment to the policies and requirements of the job? To address these needs, we partner with our clients to design and facilitate conversations that put The Coach Approach mindsets and skillsets in practice in their most pressing challenges.

Coach Approach to Aligning Perspectives in Adaptive Work

Leading change means having honest conversations to design and deliver better services and service delivery models.  To have these conversations leaders must create psychological safety so the team can explore and consider diverse perspectives.  Leaders must also be aware of their own openness – or resistance – to push back or disagreement.  With the Coach Approach mindset and skillset of presence, listening, curiosity and questions, leaders can support the team in co-creating a shared strategy and commitment.

This four session virtual/two in person day program is an advanced program for leaders who have already participated in the Coach Approach training.

If you do this training, and buy into this training, and apply this training, this could be your last training. It’s just that good.
